Through my stimulation experiences I felt as though they were very different but built off one another to allow me to learn and experience hands-on learning. During the first one I felt overwhelmed and unsure of how I would approach each scenario and patient. Before any SIM I always get very nervous and get in my head about “if I can do this?” or “Will I sound dumb?” but I feel like having to go in as a group and work together to assess the patient was very helpful and less intimidating. I think specifically within my first SIM experience I felt as though the largest challenged I faced as well as others in my group, was trying to be on the same page and not talk over each other. Prior to each patient I feel as though we tried to come up with a game plan of what we wanted to discuss and how but through the course of conversation it changed, and we overlapped one another. While that was a challenge in my first mental health SIM experience, it was not for my second. During my second there was less of us in the room assessing and conversating with the patient, so it made it easier to each flow into one another as the conversation progressed. I think if we were to have done these stimulations solo, they would first off challenge us outside our comfort zone largely, but also be difficult to cover all areas of assessment in a reasonable time. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this SIM experience specifically because of the real-life actors giving us real life scenarios to work from and experience all the emotions around it. The mental health nursing process is every changing, so it is important to go with the flow of the conversation and not strictly just try to read off a list of to-do’s. Having the ability to adjust quickly and efficiently is an important aspect to provide the patient with well-rounded and safe care. I felt like after each experience I learned more about myself as a nurse and how to correctly address specific situations. It made me want to have more experiences with patients to better myself as a future care provider.
